Helping kids feel supported

Growing up isn’t always easy. Big feelings and new situations can sometimes feel overwhelming for a child. Counselling gives kids a safe, welcoming place to share what they’re going through, discover new ways to cope, and learn tools that can help them now and in the years ahead.

Our counsellors work with children who are experiencing:

  • Emotional struggles – Worries, sadness, stress, or low confidence

  • Family changes – Divorce, separation, blended families, or the loss of someone important

  • Hard experiences – Trauma, exposure to violence, bullying

  • Major transitions – Moving schools or communities, adjusting to a new culture, health concerns

  • Behaviour challenges – Anger, attention difficulties, withdrawal, conflict with peers

We’re to help your child feel safe, supported, and confident navigating whatever comes their way.

  • Yes. What your child talks about in counselling is private and treated as confidential. For children under 18, parents or guardians usually give consent for counselling. We’ll meet with you first to discuss your goals, explain how privacy works, and answer any questions. After that, what your child shares in sessions stays private unless they’ve asked us to share certain things with you or we believe someone is at serious risk of harm.

In Alberta, some teens may be considered a mature minor, meaning they can consent to counselling on their own and decide what information is shared. If this applies, we’ll explain the process so everyone is clear. We work with you to balance your child’s privacy with your role in supporting them.

  • Our counsellors shape each session around your child’s development, personality, and needs. For younger children, that often means using play, drawing, and hands‑on activities to make it easier to express feelings. Through games, crafts, and creative exercises, kids can explore emotions, learn coping skills, and feel safe while doing it.

  • Referrals are not required; you can access counselling at Counselling Alberta anytime. Reach out by phone or fill out our online intake form to begin.
